This talk is the last of the parachute science seminar series organized by the ARC CoE Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) committee.

Abstract

Universities and institutions across the globe have seen a recent push towards growing diversity and inclusion practices that promote equity and justice within academia. In late 2020, the Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee was created at the the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies (ARC CoE) to address systemic inequalities in the workplace, including in research practice. The Committee is currently focused on addressing JEDI issues associated with four key areas: (1) How we work (i.e., research practice and engagement); (2) Pipeline, recruitment, and retention;  (3) Leadership (i.e., diversity in leadership positions), and (4) the Values, culture, image, and reputation of the ARC CoE. In this seminar, representatives from the JEDI Committee provide insights into the progress that has been made in achieving its objectives thus far. Recent research on the problems associated with parachute science will also be presented, followed with some tips on how to reduce and prevent this practice. We will conclude with an open discussion surrounding JEDI values at the ARC CoE, thereby offering a space for attendees to offer their experiences and opinions on JEDI within the ARC CoE and provide feedback about future directions for JEDI initiatives.
