Bethan grew up in the UK, where she completed a BSc (Hons) degree in Biology at Oxford Brookes University. She became fascinated by the infamous crown-of-thorns starfish (CoTS) while completing her undergraduate project on their distribution and feeding habits in the Wakatobi Marine National Park, Indonesia. Bethan subsequently completed an MSc in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation at Imperial College London, where she studied another charismatic organism, the mosquito. Although Bethan had a fondness for mosquitoes, she very much missed the CoTS. She is now a PhD candidate in the ARC CoE investigating the effect of ocean warming on CoTS, under the supervision of Prof. Morgan Pratchett (primary), Dr. Jennifer Donelson, Dr. Ciemon Caballes, Dr. Sven Uthicke (AIMS) and Prof. Andrew Hoey. Bethan hopes that her work will aid our understanding of the future population dynamics of this troublesome starfish, and the threat they may pose to the reef under further climate change.
