Michael is originally from Nebraska (USA), he obtained a BS in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Idaho in 2004. Michael completed his PhD in 2010 in the MIT/WHOI Joint Program in oceanography working on biomineralization in corals. He went on to do a postdoc at the Centre Scientifique de Monaco where he worked on the energetics of coral calcification.  He held a postdoc position at the University of Western Australia where he researched the boron isotope pH proxy in corals.
