Former Research Fellow

James Cook University

Dr Joana Figueiredo grew up in Lisbon, Portugal. She completed a B.Sc. with Honours in Marine Biology in 2003, a Post-Graduation in Statistics Applied to Biology and Health Sciences in 2005, and a Ph.D. in Marine Sciences in 2009, at the University of Lisbon. Joana is a larval biologist with a special interest in marine invertebrates. Her Ph.D. goal was to develop and improve aquaculture protocols of crustaceans to minimize the need for collection of organisms in the wild, and thereby contribute to the advance in the sustainable use of biodiversity. Since then she has been using her larval culture skills combined with mathematical modelling to understand how environmental conditions determine important ecological processes, such larval survival and settlement competence. Her current research focused on the early life-history of corals and its implications coral dispersal and metapopulation connectivity.
