About CoralCoe - Reef Science, Accessible

About CoralCoe

Reef science is too important - and too fascinating - to remain locked behind paywalls and academic jargon.

We're making the latest coral reef research accessible to everyone who wants to understand, and protect - the ocean's most vital ecosystems.

Our Mission

CoralCoe exists to bridge the gap between reef science and public understanding. We translate cutting-edge research, field observations, and conservation breakthroughs into writing that's rigorous without being inaccessible.

Make Science Accessible

Reef science shouldn't require a PhD to understand. We distill complex oceanography, marine ecology, and conservation biology into stories that engage and inform.

Celebrate Reef Biodiversity

With over 25% of marine species dependent on coral reefs, these ecosystems deserve celebration alongside conservation urgency. We showcase the wonder that motivates protection.

Empower Informed Travel

Divers and snorkelers can be reef guardians. We provide the knowledge to engage with reefs responsibly, understand what you're seeing, and support conservation-minded operators.

Meet Daniel Mercer

CoralCoe is led by Daniel Mercer, a reef writer and marine ecology enthusiast based in Queensland, Australia. With a background from James Cook University - home to one of the world's leading concentrations of coral reef scientists - Daniel has spent over a decade diving, researching, and writing about reef systems across the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

During his time at JCU, Daniel contributed to reef ecology research projects, participated in field expeditions to remote coral ecosystems, and developed a deep appreciation for the intersection of rigorous science and public communication. He's logged over 1,500 dives across the Coral Triangle, Great Barrier Reef, Red Sea, and Caribbean, experiencing firsthand the reefs he writes about.

Daniel's approach combines scientific accuracy with narrative engagement. He believes reef science is too important, and too fascinating - to remain locked behind paywalls and academic language. Every article on CoralCoe reflects this conviction: that understanding reefs should be accessible to divers, travelers, students, and anyone curious about the ocean.

Our Academic Foundation

James Cook University: Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies

James Cook University (JCU) in Townsville, Queensland, is home to the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies - one of the world's foremost concentrations of coral reef scientists, ecologists, and oceanographers. Since Daniel's time at JCU, the university has remained central to CoralCoe's mission.

JCU's researchers are advancing our understanding of:

Coral physiology and adaptationReef resilience to climate changeFish population dynamicsMarine conservation policySustainable reef tourismReef restoration techniques

CoralCoe draws inspiration and rigor from the JCU research community. Many articles reflect breakthroughs from JCU scientists and partner institutions, translated for a broader audience. We're grateful for the intellectual foundation that JCU provided.

What You'll Find Here

Regional Reef Guides

Comprehensive guides to the world's greatest reef systems - the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Triangle, Red Sea, and Caribbean. Each guide covers dive sites, marine life, conservation challenges, and travel logistics written by someone who's actually dived those reefs.

Marine Science Articles

Deep dives into reef ecology, coral physiology, conservation biology, and oceanography. These articles explore the "how" and "why" of reef systems - the science that explains what you see underwater.

Diving & Snorkeling Guides

Practical guides for reef visitors - from diving techniques and safety to photography tips, responsible tourism, and recognizing marine life. Whether you're certified or just snorkeling, we help you engage respectfully with reefs.

Conservation Stories

The reefs you dive today are shaped by conservation decisions made yesterday. We cover protection strategies, restoration projects, climate science, and the people working to preserve reefs for future generations.

Why CoralCoe Matters

Reefs are in crisis. Understanding them is the first step to saving them.

25% of marine species depend on coral reefs, yet these ecosystems cover less than 1% of the ocean floor. In the last 50 years, we've lost roughly half the world's coral reefs. Climate change, overfishing, pollution, and coastal development continue to threaten the remainder.

But this isn't a story of inevitable loss. Marine protected areas are working. Coral restoration is advancing. Communities worldwide are implementing conservation practices that demonstrably improve reef health. Scientists are discovering coral populations with unexpected resilience to warming. There are reasons for hope - but only if enough people understand the stakes and the solutions.

That's what CoralCoe is for. We provide:

Knowledge for divers and snorkelers who want to understand what they're seeing and engage responsibly with reefs.

Resources for students and teachers learning about marine ecology, oceanography, and conservation biology.

Context for travelers choosing reef destinations and wanting to support conservation-minded operators.

A platform for reef science that celebrates the research while remaining accessible to non-specialists.
