Michelle Achlatis

PhD candidate

University of Queensland

Michelle joined the Coral Reef Ecosystems lab at the University of Queensland as a PhD candidate in 2014. Her research focuses on the metabolic dynamics of coral reef bioerosion by excavating sponges under present and future environmental conditions, using Cliona orientalis as her model species. Her principal supervisors are Prof. Ove Hoegh-Guldberg and A/Prof. Sophie Dove and she conducts most of her work on Heron Island reef in the southern GBR. Michelle completed her Master’s at the University of Amsterdam working on cellular regeneration of Caribbean reef sponges and majoring in Science Communication. She has interned as a scientific content manager for Nature and Wildlife documentary/photography  productions both in Brisbane and in Amsterdam. She began her studies at the University of Crete in her homeland Greece where she conducted a morphometric analysis of Mediterranean polychaete worms.
