Jessie grew up in Nova Scotia, Canada, where she fell in love with the ocean. She attended Dalhousie University in Halifax, where she completed a combined honours degree in marine biology and oceanography under the supervision of Dr. Anna Metaxas. After hearing tales of the wild and wonderfully untouched Ningaloo Reef, Jessie moved to Western Australia in 2011 to where she completed her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Malcolm McCulloch and Prof. Gary Kendrick focussing on how climate change will affect calcification rates of important WA reef-building species such as corals and coralline algae. She also investigated how interactions between algal taxa will change as the ocean becomes more acidic.
