Hayley Clements

Hayley Clements

PhD graduate (visited from University of Cape Town, South Africa)

James Cook University

Growing up in South Africa’s biggest city, Johannesburg, Hayley left the city lights as soon as she could in search of greener horizons. She monitored turtles in Guatemala, scarlet macaws in Costa Rica and cheetahs in South Africa. While running a wildlife research programme on a private game reserve in South Africa, Hayley became interested in the role that private land can play in conservation. Privately owned protected areas conserve over double the land area in South Africa than government-owned protected areas, yet little is known about their objectives, management and ultimately their resilience in conserving biodiversity long-term. Hayley is therefore undertaking a PhD, supervised by Prof Graeme Cumming at JCU and Prof Timm Hoffman at the University of Cape Town, aimed at shedding some light on the private protected area industry. She is interested in natural resource management, social-ecological systems and large predator ecology.
