Project title:

Improving the effectiveness of marine protected area networks: shifting the focus towards threat mitigation and avoiding residual conservation

Project description:

Ed’s research focuses on determining the best ways to design marine protected area (MPA) networks to mitigate threats to marine biodiversity. In order to have the greatest impact, we must use MPAs in a way that reduces the loss of biodiversity, otherwise these MPAs are what we call “residual” (having no impact). For his research, Ed is comparing the effectiveness of alternative MPA network designs at mitigating the loss of marine biodiversity on the coral reefs of Micronesia. He is then using this information to assess how well existing MPA networks conserve marine biodiversity, and to identify areas that should be protected in the future.
