Blake Spady

Blake Spady

PhD candidate

James Cook University

Blake was born the son of a peanut farmer in southern Virginia, USA. With no neighbours for miles and only 6 channels on the television, he developed an interest in the natural world and spent much of his time navigating through the forests and marshlands surrounding his home. After graduating high school, he moved to the big city to study marine ecology at George Mason University in the greater Washington, D.C. area, where developed a fascination for cephalopods and ecology. He then decided that D.C. had too many people and not enough squid, so he worked manual labour until he saved up enough money to move down to Australia, which has the largest diversity of cephalopods in the world. There he gained his master’s degree at James Cook University with a minor research project under Dr. Sue-Ann Watson and Prof. Philip Munday studying the effects of projected near-future CO2 levels on the behaviours of squid. He is currently still working with Sue-Ann and Phil on his PhD project studying the effects of elevated CO2 on the predatory behaviours, learning, metabolism, and life history characteristics of two seperate orders of tropical cephalopod.
