ARC CoE for Coral Reef Studies

Late last year Prof. Garry Russ, Chief Investigator of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University (JCU), was conferred a Doctor of Science degree honoris causa by Silliman University (SU) in the Phillipines.

Russ was awarded the degree in recognition of his outstanding international accomplishments as a marine scientist. Well-known for his research on coral reefs, reef fishes, and fisheries from the Great Barrier Reef, Russ also helped shape Philippine policy on No-Take Marine Reserves (NTMRs) and local marine resource management. His continued work in the area involves the long-term monitoring of reef fish populations both in and out of marine reserves.

In 1999, Russ received a Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation—one of the most prestigious awards in the world for marine conservation. He shared this with his SU colleague, Dr. Angel C. Alcala.
