Today, Professor Josh Cinner has been elected a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences Australia, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the academic discipline of human geography and broader society.

“Fellows are elected to the Academy by their peers on the basis of a distinguished contribution to one or more of the Social Sciences that has also been recognised internationally,” said Academy President, Glenn Withers, AO.

Peace Corps volunteer turned social science Professor, Josh has demonstrated a significant commitment to understanding the human dimensions of coral reef management. The results of his hard work have been published in journals such as Nature, PNAS, and Global Environmental Change, and have gained major international coverage in news outlets such as The New York Times and CNN.

“It is an incredible honour to be elected a Fellow of this highly respected academy. For nerds like me, it is akin to being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” said Josh.

Josh is one of just thirty-six Australian social scientists to be elected to the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia this year, and only one of two Fellows at James Cook University.

The new Fellows of the Academy will be formally welcomed and inducted at the Academy’s General Meeting and Annual Symposium to be held in Canberra from 12-14 November 2018.

Hearty congratulations from all of us here at the Centre!

Watch his presentation from the Centre’s annual Coral Reef Futures Symposium titled: “The gravity of human impacts mediates coral reef conservation gains,” based off of his recent publication in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
