Coral CoE’s Dr Jenni Donelson and Professor Mike Kingsford were both honoured in this year’s Australian Marine Sciences Association (AMSA) awards—the nation’s top awards in marine science.
Dr Donelson is AMSA’s 2021 Emerging Leader in Marine Science. Her ground-breaking research showed the potential for acclimation of coral reef fishes to climate change. This led to transformative studies using cutting-edge genomics methods into the biological processes and cellular mechanisms that enable transgenerational plasticity in fishes. Despite only completing her PhD in 2012, Dr Donelson has already published more than 45 scientific papers of high quality and significance. In addition, she holds several leadership roles and is proactive in STEM engagement.
Dr Donelson won the James Cook University Inclusive Practice Award in 2018. Also among her many awards to date is the 2012 Winston Churchill Fellowship. Dr Donelson will give a featured talk at the upcoming AMSA2021 virtual conference on 1 July.
Every year, AMSA honours an eminent marine scientist with a Jubilee Award for excellence in marine research and outstanding contribution to marine research in Australia. Professor Kingsford is this year’s Jubilee Award winner. He won the award for significant and novel contributions across his 40 year career to larval fish ecology, biogeography and connectivity. His research has a lasting impact on the understanding of planktonic dispersal. Prof Kingsford is also one of the world’s foremost experts on jellyfishes—notably cubozoan jellyfishes (box and Irukandji).
Prof Kingsford is known for being an exceptional advocate and ambassador for Australian marine science, with a steadfast commitment to supporting Australian marine societies and students.
Jubilee Award
This professional award was first awarded in AMSA’s Silver Jubilee Year (1988). It is presented to a scientist who has made an outstanding contribution to marine research in Australia.
Emerging Leader in Marine Science Award
This is a new award, established in 2020. It is presented to an early or mid-career scientist in recognition of their outstanding research and academic achievements in marine science. The award also considers the translation of their research for engagement outside of academia, as well as the mentoring of other young scientists.
