In an announcement at the annual Queensland Young Tall Poppy Science Awards, Dr Alana Grech was recognised as the 2018 ‘Queensland Young Tall Poppy Scientist of the Year.’

Dr Grech is the Centre’s Assistant Director based at the James Cook University node in Townsville, Queensland. Her exemplary achievements as an early career researcher, as well as her commitment to public engagement, gained her the highly regarded title.

Dr Grech’s applied research uses geographic information systems to predict and map changes in coastal wildlife and habitats, with a particular focus on seagrass meadows in the Great Barrier Reef.

“My models allow me to predict locations where human activities, such as poor water quality, coastal development and fishing, are potentially damaging the environment, to help inform environmental policy and practice to protect the reef,” said Dr Grech.

Dr Grech is also an avid communicator. She passionately communicates her science using a number of different platforms. She has a large Twitter following, and writes for popular online media outlet, The Conversation.

Dr Grech was one of a dozen contenders from across the State selected as Tall Poppy winners, including Dr Georgina Gurney, a CoralCoE Environmental Social Science Research Fellow.

The evening event was hosted in Brisbane on 20 September by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science, in partnership with the Office of the Queensland Chief Scientist.

We congratulate all Tall Poppy’s and commend them for their outstanding achievements.
