Research Interests
The bulk of my experience is in public and private practice in the Indigenous and non indigenous heritage field. I have run a successful private practice in NSW and have previously worked as the senior manager responsible for cultural heritage within the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (now part of the Dept of Environment and Conservation). I served for several years on the NSW Heritage Council and received an award from the Chair of the Heritage Council for my contribution to the conservation of the heritage of NSW. I am currently a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at James Cook University in a position co-funded by the School of Anthropology, Archaeology and Sociology and the ARC Centre of Excellence in Coral Reef Studies.
I am currently involved in a collaborative project ‘Cape York Connections’ with colleagues Drs Shelley Greer and Rosita Henry.
My research interests include
- the integration of the management of cultural and social values in the management of protected areas;
- Indigenous relationships with coastal environments in Cape York through time.
- Trade and exchange in northern Cape York and across the mainland, Torres Straits and Papuan borderlands.
- Transformations and adaptations in Cape York as a result of colonization.
- Indigenous relationships to land and sea through time.
