Research and implementation frameworks and tools for governing resilience.
Resilience thinking provides a novel approach to understanding and managing complex marine social-ecological systems. However, resilience approaches remain fairly conceptual and do not yet provide pragmatic guidance for NRM management and development, particularly in developing countries. My work aims to operationalise resilience thinking in policy, research and management through in-depth empirical work and development of implementation frameworks and tools.
Reconciling sustainability and development through governance processes and structures.
To improve the contribution of resilience thinking to the pursuit of sustainability development, my work will build on the above to develop a more comprehensive conceptual framework for resilience. This will integrate resilience thinking and other systems approaches with human development perspectives. In particular, I will explore the nexus between NRM governance and development policy and intervention, at multiple levels, to understand how benefits from ecosystem services are accessed, distributed and used, and the implications of this for poverty reduction, adaptive capacity and resilience. The research will also assess different stakeholders’ perceptions of disturbance and how this motivates or constrains ecosystem stewardship, climate change adaptation and sustainable development.
