Professor Terry Hughes - Centre Director
Professor Terry Hughes is the inaugural Director of Centre, and an ARC Federation Fellow (2002-2007, 2007-2012). He grew up in Ireland, graduating in Zoology from Trinity College, Dublin. He received his doctorate in 1984 from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, USA for work on coral reefs in Jamaica, West Indies. From 1984-1990 he was a Postdoctoral and Research Fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he began fieldwork at Heron Island, on the Great Barrier Reef. In 1990, Terry was recruited from the USA to Australia by JCU, to develop and lead a program in coral reef ecology. He has published over 70 influential scientific papers on the ecology and management of coral reefs, including 17 papers in Science and Nature. Professor Hughes was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences in 2001 in recognition of "a career which has significantly advanced the world's store of scientific knowledge". He was recently appointed to the Board of the Beijer International Institute for Ecological Economics in Stockholm, and serves as an editor on several journals. As Centre Director, Terry oversees and coordinates all research activities of the Centre.
