Position Statement
The ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies seeks a postdoctoral through to senior research fellow to work in any area of coral reef biodiversity (e.g., biogeography, phylogeography, paleobiology, evolution, mathematical modelling, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem function). Based at James Cook University in Townsville (Australia), the appointee will contribute to improving understanding of mechanisms and processes that maintain local and global biodiversity of coral reefs. The successful applicant will have substantial freedom to forge a research program that suits her or his interests and abilities.
Duties and Accountabilities
- Conduct research independently and as part of a team which contributes to the achievement of the aims of the ARC Centre of Excellence, particularly the research program for Understanding and Managing Coral Reef Biodiversity
- Participate in and assist with organising workshops and working groups on coral reef biodiversity;
- Contribute to improving understanding of mechanisms and processes that maintain local and global biodiversity
- Work independently and collaborate with centre staff to apply skills to research problems in coral reef biodiversity
- Produce publications from research in high quality journals
- Co-supervise graduate students, if appropriate
Key Selection Criteria
- PhD in related discipline
- Research interest in any area of coral reef biodiversity (e.g. biogeography, phylogeography, paleobiology, evolution, theoretical/statistical modelling, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem function);
- Exceptional publications record for stage of career
- Capacity to bring fresh approaches to the study of coral reef biodiversity (either conceptual or technical, preferably both) that will complement and enhance, rather than duplicate, existing areas of strength in the Centre;
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills
Desirable Selection Criteria
- Prior research experience with coral reefs, for applicants intending to do field or laboratory work.

Employment Type
Appointments will be full-time for a fixed term (research only) of up to three years subject to a probationary period. Suitable candidates may be considered for extension beyond 3 years or for permanent positions
Salary
Academic Level A - $61,856 - $66,282 per annum or
Academic Level B - $69,689 - $82,461 per annum
Academic Level C - $85,013 per annum
Level of appointment and commencing salary will be in accordance with qualifications and experience. Benefits include generous employer superannuation contribution and attractive options for salary packaging.
